Motorcycle CE Armor: How to Choose Jacket Protection
Motorcycle CE armor guide: Level 1 vs Level 2, AA/AAA jacket ratings, shoulder-elbow-back armor, mesh vs leather, and fit.
What CE tells you
CE-marked armor (shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, back) limits impact energy in tests. Level 2 usually absorbs more than Level 1, with thickness / flex trade-offs.
Garment abrasion classes (A / AA / AAA and similar) describe slide resistance. Empty armor pockets in a fashion jacket are not CE protection.
Where armor belongs
Minimum: shoulders + elbows + back. Pants: knees + hips. Chest protectors are extra for adventure / track.
- Real CE pieces in the pockets, or just foam?
- Level 2 backs are often sold separately (check pocket fit)
- Toy plates that eject on impact do not count
Leather, textile, mesh
Leather is strong in abrasion, heavy in heat. Textile is versatile, often layered for weather. Mesh breathes in summer; abrasion depends on class, and cheap mesh can be weak.

Fit is critical
Armor must sit on the joint; a baggy jacket lets elbow plates slide. Try it in a riding posture: hands on bars, slight forward lean.

Budget order
Helmet first, then jacket+armor and gloves, then pants/boots. A pricey graphic tee plus a cheap helmet is backwards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Level 1 enough?
It is standard in many street jackets. Choose Level 2 if you want more absorption for harder use.
Does an airbag vest replace CE armor?
It complements; it does not replace. Classic armor + good textile/leather remain the base.
Used armor?
Impacted or aged foam is suspect. New CE pieces are a cheap upgrade.
Are jeans OK?
CE motorcycle jeans (aramid layer + armor pockets) are different from fashion denim.
