Motorcycle Suspension Preload: Sag, Springs, Passenger
Motorcycle suspension preload explained: sag measurement, passenger / luggage setup, not confusing rebound, and a practical street starting point.
Preload ≠ a stiffer spring
Preload changes how much the spring is pre-compressed; it does not change spring rate. Cranking preload for a ‘rock hard’ feel is the wrong tool; you may need a firmer spring / correct oil.
Fork oil is separate: Motorcycle Fork Oil: Weight, Volume, and Change Intervals
What sag is
Rider sag is how much the suspension compresses with you (and typical gear) on the bike. Street targets are often a percentage of travel, measured in mm.
- Measure free sag (bike alone) and rider sag separately
- Use consistent rear / fork measure points
- Add preload for passenger + bags
- Measure on flat ground with a helper
When to change it
Two-up, heavy camping loads, or riders far from the stock weight assumption. Two-up: Motorcycle Two-Up Riding: Rider and Passenger Guide. Camping: Motorcycle Camping: Packing List and Load Balance
Track days may use a different set: First Motorcycle Track Day: Prep, Group, Expectations
Do not confuse rebound / compression
Rebound is return speed; compression resists the hit (when adjustable). Max preload with ignored rebound makes a pogo rear.
Tire pressure also changes ‘suspension feel’: Motorcycle Tire Pressure Chart: PSI / Bar Guide
DIY warning
Follow manual torque / collar directions. Endless turns the wrong way strip threads. Log clicks: RPMVault motorcycle garage
Frequently Asked Questions
Does more preload raise seat height?
Usually yes (less squat). Low-seat needs are separate: Low Seat Height Motorcycles: A Guide for Shorter Riders
Front fork preload only?
Some bikes have it (nut / collar). If not, talk oil height / springs.
Are click counts universal?
No. Each maker’s ‘standard’ click differs; use the manual.
Cheap ‘stiffer’ springs?
Wrong rate / length is dangerous. Known kits plus sag measurement.
