Motorcycle Tire Life: When Should You Replace Them?
When to replace motorcycle tires: tread depth, age, uneven wear, wet grip, and why front and rear wear differently.
When is a tire done?
Three signals: tread below safe/legal depth, cracks/damage/deformation, and age-related hardening even at low km. Lost wet confidence is also a valid reason to change early.
Wear bars (TWI) show you are near the minimum; many riders replace sooner for wet safety.
Tread depth and wet performance
Grooves evacuate water. Less tread means earlier aquaplaning risk. ‘Still grips dry’ can mislead in rain.
Measure center and shoulders; a bald center with healthy edges hints at pressure or riding style issues.
Front and rear age differently
The rear usually dies first (drive + load transfer). You do not have to scrap a healthy front just to ‘buy a set’, but huge age gaps can unbalance grip.
On fitment, verify size, load rating, and direction arrows. The wrong cheap size is expensive risk.
- Set pressure cold to the model spec
- Aggressive riding / track days shorten life
- Storage: avoid sun, ozone, and bad straps
Age and storage
DOT date codes live on the sidewall. Low-km tires at 5–6+ years can harden and crack, especially outdoors.
On used bikes, read the date; verify ‘fitted last month’ claims against DOT.
Track it in the garage
Log install km, brand/size, and DOT. The next change stops being a surprise, and helps at resale.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many km do tires last?
Often a wide 4,000–15,000+ km band by compound and style. Hypersport shorter, touring longer.
Can I replace only the rear?
Yes, common. If the front is healthy and not ancient, fine, keep compound character compatible.
What minimum tread depth?
Legal minimums vary; many riders plan before ~2 mm for wet safety. Check local rules.
Does pressure extend life?
Correct pressure aids even wear and heat control. Wrong pressure kills life and safety.
