Motorcycle Valve Clearance: When and Why to Check

What valve clearance does
Metal expands when hot. A small cold clearance lets valves fully close at temperature. Too little clearance can hold a valve open; too much causes noise and weak cylinder filling.
Intake and exhaust specs differ (mm) and are always measured cold with the manual procedure.
Shims vs screw adjusters
Many modern bikes use shim-under-bucket or shim-over-bucket: remove the cover, measure with feelers, swap shims if needed. Older / some designs use screw-and-locknut adjusters.
Shim work needs tools, torque order, and patience. The wrong thickness is an expensive cylinder head.
How often?
Manual intervals range widely, often 5,000–40,000+ km. Singles and high-rpm engines usually need more frequent checks; some modern designs run long intervals.

Symptoms: tight vs loose
Tight (little / zero lash): rough cold idle, power loss, overheating, burned-valve risk. Loose: ticking, weak low rpm, incomplete lift.

DIY or shop?
Screw-adjust engines are more DIY-friendly with feelers and torque experience. Shim engines are often cheaper at a good shop for most owners.

Does valve adjustment add power?
Keeping specs protects power. Running ‘tighter for performance’ is damage risk, not a mod.
Measure hot?
No. Manuals want cold checks. Hot readings lie.
Is this the cam chain?
No. Timing chain / belt is separate. Valve clearance is the valve-to-adjuster / shim gap.
Do shims always get replaced?
No. In-spec means record only. Out-of-spec means shim swap or screw adjust.
