The first 10 minutes are slickest

Early rain turns road oil and dust into a film. After a longer downpour the surface often cleans, but metal plates, crosswalk paint, and rail tracks stay hazardous.

City intersections and bus stops can hold fuel film and rubber polish.

Tires and pressure

Cold tires grip less, easy throttle/brake for the first kilometers. Low tread depth hurts water clearance; rain should advance a tire-change decision.

Stay in the OEM pressure range. Too low or too high both hurt the contact patch for different reasons.

Braking distance and ABS

Open following distance vs dry roads. Brake earlier and progressively instead of stabbing the levers.

ABS helps prevent lockup but does not repeal physics. Without ABS, rear + careful front technique matters more, see our ABS guide too.

Line and speed

Reduce lean and speed in corners; avoid polished center-lane slime. Sudden throttle chops and flicks invite rear slides.

Cross standing water upright and steady; do not dive into unknown depth.

  • Early brakes, smooth inputs
  • Paint / metal covers = upright crossing
  • Visibility: lights + contrast gear

Gear checklist

Waterproof layers, anti-fog visor, water-resistant gloves, solid boot soles. Slippery levers with wet hands raise risk.

Extra visibility helps in city rain: reflective details, brighter colors, correct lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you never ride in rain?

No, but new riders should skip storms early on. Experience, gear, and a calm pace make rain manageable.

Is ABS enough in rain?

It helps; it is not enough. Distance, tires, and line are still on you.

Are sport tires bad in rain?

Some hypersports optimized for hot dry tracks reach their wet limit sooner. Sport-touring rubber is often more forgiving.

Visor fogged, what now?

Anti-fog, manage breath, crack the shield slightly. Do not continue blind, pull off safely.
