Scooter CVT Belt and Variator: Symptoms, Mileage, Replacement
When to replace a scooter CVT belt, symptoms, and why rollers and clutch shoes belong in the same job. PCX, NMAX, ADV, Forza, XMAX.
How many km does a scooter belt last?
Most Honda and Yamaha 125–250 manuals list belt inspect, not a hard replace km. Real life is 20,000–40,000 km. Solo, flat roads, and correct tires can pass 30,000 km. Two-up, hills, courier launches, and wrong tires crack it at 15,000–20,000 km. 24,000 km is a common inspect stop, not an automatic replace.
The belt is not engine oil. A 6,000 km oil change does not replace the belt. Final-drive oil does not either. Three invoices.

What are CVT belt failure symptoms?
Revs climb while speed lags: the belt is slipping. Launch shudder, burnt rubber smell, dust in the cover, and heat under the seat are the usual list. Idle misfire is not a belt. Belt symptoms show under load, especially on a hill launch.

How do you inspect a scooter belt?
You open the cover. “It sounds fine” is not an inspection. Sequence below. Torque and gaskets are in the book. Warranty bikes are less argument at a dealer.
- Let the scooter cool. Park on firm ground.
- Mark and remove cover screws. Do not pinch the gasket.
- Look for cracks, glaze, and cords on the belt flanks.
- Check rollers for a glassy step.
- Check clutch shoe thickness and springs.
- Clean debris from the groove.
- If in doubt, replace belt and worn rollers together.
- Refit the cover at book torque. Do not mix screw lengths.
Can I replace only the belt?
No. A glazed roller kills a new belt in a few thousand kilometres. Thin shoes still slip. Cheap “belt only” jobs become a second labour bill. Ask for belt + rollers + shoes on the quote.
A clogged air filter heats the CVT. Low tire pressure cooks the belt on hills. Fix pressure before you buy another belt.
Do PCX, NMAX, ADV, Forza, and XMAX belts differ?
The logic is the same. Width and heat differ. 125 belts are thinner. 250 Forza / XMAX belts are wider and cost more. ADV packs dust sooner than a city PCX. Courier launches eat 125 belts faster than weekend errands. Copy the belt part number, not a generic “125 belt.”
Keep records

If profile and width match and the maker is known. Cheap no-name belts powder in a few thousand km. Prefer OEM numbers or a known brand.
