Yamaha MT-09 Maintenance Schedule: CP3 Oil, Filter, Valves

Yamaha MT-09 service: 847 and 890 CP3, EU 10,000 km oil, 40,000 km valves, litres, and the US mile difference. SP and quickshifter do not rewrite oil.

Two CP3 engines, two books

2013–2020 MT-09 bikes use an 847 cc CP3. From 2021 the engine is the 890 cc CP3. EU oil ceilings are still 10,000 km or 12 months on most years. Litres and filter steps change by generation. Do not paste an 847 chart onto an 890.

First 1,000 km

First oil and filter is 1,000 km or 600 miles. Break-in oil carries metal. Do not skip the filter. The chain grows in the first thousand kilometres. SP suspension and a quickshifter do not cancel break-in oil.

Cold full throttle, the limiter, and one-speed highway runs are cheap break-in mistakes. Guide: New Motorcycle Break-In Guide: First Kilometers Done Right

Engine oil: kilometres, grade, litres

EU copies want oil after 1,000 km on the 10,000 km steps plus the annual check. US charts are tighter. In Turkey, read the EU kilometres. City stop-start, track, and dust are severe use. Shorten the ceiling.

Yamalube 10W-40 or the grade on the temperature chart, JASO MA. Wet clutch. No car oil. 2021+ 890 cc charts often sit around 3.1 L with a filter. Pour short, hold the bike upright, finish on the stick or window. 847 cc litres are different.

  • EU / TR: oil at 10,000 km or 12 months
  • US: tighter mile chart, not the TR book

Valves, plugs, air filter

Valve clearance is checked, and adjusted if needed, at 40,000 km. The CP3 makes torque low in the rev range. “Sportbike valves every 20,000 km” is not Yamaha’s street line. Measure earlier if it is noisy after track use.

Plugs often inspect at 10,000 km and replace at 20,000 km on EU charts. The air filter may sit on a 40,000 km replace line. Dust means sooner. Do not blast a paper element with a compressor.

Coolant, brakes, chain

Coolant is often 3 years. Water top-up is not a change. Brake fluid is 2 years. DOT 4. Do not mix DOT 5 silicone.

Chain care is not on the oil clock. Clean and lube every 500–800 km, more after rain. Slack is a manual window. Over-tight kills the wheel bearing. Chain guide: How to Maintain a Motorcycle Chain: Clean, Lube, Tension

Cost and records

Oil is cheap at home. The 40,000 km valve job is labour. A quickshifter fault is not an oil row. Log date, km, oil brand, filter, and chain notes. Garage: RPMVault motorcycle garage Hub: motorcycle maintenance schedule hub

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MT-09 oil interval?

EU and Turkey copies say 10,000 km or 12 months after the first 1,000 km. US charts are tighter. Shorten the interval for heavy use.

How much oil does the MT-09 take?

Many 2021+ 890 cc charts sit around 3.1 L with a filter. 847 cc bikes differ. Hold the bike upright and finish on the stick.

Do SP or Y-AMT change the oil interval?

They do not rewrite the engine-oil row. Extra mechatronics checks are dealer work.
