How to Choose Motorcycle Gloves: CE, Season, Fit
Motorcycle glove buying guide: CE protection, summer / winter / rain, touchscreen fingertips, wrist straps, and common fit mistakes.
Why motorcycle gloves?
In a fall, hands go down first. Motorcycle gloves add palm / knuckle protection, smarter seams, and wrist retention. Knit ‘sport’ gloves are not the job.
CE-marked pairs pass impact / abrasion tests. Same logic as jacket armor: Motorcycle CE Armor: How to Choose Jacket Protection
Types by season
Summer: mesh / perforated with real knuckle armor. Winter: insulation plus windblock, with some feel loss. Rain: membrane gloves or overgloves.
- Short city hops: light CE short-cuff can work
- Touring: long cuff, membrane option
- Sport: hard protection, poor for walking
- Touchscreen tips: handy for GPS without killing protection
Fit test
Fingertips should not be baggy; excess length folds and ruins control. Wrist strap snug; a pull test should not strip the glove off easily.
Wear them on the bars for 10 minutes. Sizing jumps by brand, like boots and helmets.
Heat and cold
In heat, use thin armored summer gloves: Riding a Motorcycle in Hot Weather. In cold, kill wind first; heated gloves are optional with a power plan.
Night fatigue plus numb hands: Motorcycle Night Riding: Visibility and Speed
Care
Sweat and salt eat stitching. Clean per maker advice; do not tumble-dry leather. When palms are worn through, protection is gone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Winter gloves in summer?
Sweat, swelling, bad feel. Two seasonal pairs beat one compromise for most riders.
Are short cuffs enough?
Often for low-speed city. Higher speed / crashes favor long cuffs and straps.
Need women’s fit?
Narrower palms / shorter fingers often fit better in women’s lasts; worth trying.
Used gloves?
Sweat, bacteria, unknown impacts. Prefer new.
