Ownership & Maintenance
KTM 390 Duke and 390 Adventure Maintenance Schedule (2026)
KTM 390 oil interval: 7,500 km on 373 cc bikes, 10,000 km on 2024+ Duke. Adventure air filter, valves, and whether KTM service is actually expensive.
How often should I change KTM 390 oil?
2017–2023 390 Duke / Adventure (373 cc): oil every 7,500 km or 12 months, first service about 1,000 km. 2024+ 390 Duke (399 cc): oil every 10,000 km or 12 months. Spec is typically SAE 15W-50, JASO MA2. KTM points at Motorex; equivalent MA2 synthetics are used. Split generations by VIN. Do not mix 7,500 with 10,000.
Valves: 15,000 km on the old engine, 20,000 km on the 2024+ Duke. No calendar trigger. The air filter is an every-oil item, sooner in dust. That line costs more on the Adventure.

| Coolant | ~4 year band | Follow the year row |
Is KTM 390 maintenance expensive?
Oil and filter cost more than a 125 scooter because you use 15W-50 and a new filter every oil. The invoice that hurts is the air filter, the chain set, and the 15,000 / 20,000 km valve check. There is no Desmo and no cam belt. “KTM ruins you” is usually a clogged filter and a tight chain, not a brand curse.
Dealer labour is higher. Software campaigns often stay at the dealer. Home oil during warranty can start a paperwork fight. After warranty, oil at home and valves at a shop is a common split.
Why is 390 Adventure service different from the Duke?
The engines are related. The dust is not. Adventure airboxes eat silt. Waiting for 7,500 or 10,000 km on dirt lean-richens the mix and sands the piston. Open the filter at 3,000–5,000 km on dirt. Do not wash and refit a paper element.
Spoke wheels need nipples after mud. The chain is a 520. Mud makes slack readings lie. Wash, then set millimetres. Fork seals weep after stone chips. That is not an oil-change job.
If your 2025+ Adventure moved to 399 cc, do not assume the 2024 Duke oil row. Open that year’s chart. This article splits 373 cc Adventure from 2024 Duke.
When are valves and plugs due?
A single-cylinder 390 valve job is shorter than a four-cylinder naked, still a cover-off job. Measure cold. Old bikes 15,000 km, 2024+ Duke 20,000 km. If the tick changes, go early. Plugs often sit on the valve visit. You do not owe a plug at every oil. You often owe a filter.
Chain, tires, cooling
Duke chains rust in city salt. Adventure packs grit. Oil on dirt is paste. Clean every 500–800 km. Slack in the millimetre window. Overtight kills the rear bearing.
Coolant is often a 48-month item on KTM. Clear the radiator of bags and mud. Summer heat is not fixed by shorter oil only.
Duke tires: sport pressures. Adventure two-up: loaded line. Do not copy solo Duke numbers onto a bagged Adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often do I change oil on a KTM 390 Duke?
Pre-2024 373 cc: 7,500 km or 12 months. 2024+ 399 cc Duke: 10,000 km or 12 months. First service is about 1,000 km. Confirm your year.
Is 390 Adventure oil the same as the Duke?
On 373 cc years the 7,500 km / 12 month skeleton is shared. Dust kills the Adventure filter first. For 2025+ Adventure, use that manual.
Is KTM 390 expensive to maintain?
The litre of oil is not the story. Air filters every service, chains, and 15,000/20,000 km valves are. Skipping the filter is what gets expensive.
What oil does it take?
SAE 15W-50, JASO MA2. KTM recommends Motorex. Do not use car 5W-30.
Are valves due at every oil change?
No. 15,000 km on the old engine, 20,000 km on the 2024+ Duke. Oil is 7,500 or 10,000 km.
Can I use a Duke 125 schedule on a 390?
No. Different engine. Do not copy 125 rows onto a 390.
