Yamaha R25 Maintenance Schedule: Oil, Chain, Service km

R25 and MT-25 share the engine and the calendar

The Yamaha YZF-R25 and MT-25 share the same 249 cc parallel-twin family. Fairings make oil-filter and spark-plug access harder on the R25. They do not change the service mileage. Small Yamaha sport manuals may show a 6,000 km or 10,000 km oil step depending on market. Asian copies often ask for 1,000 / 6,000 / 12,000 km. European copies may look like the MT-07 10,000 km step. Turkish dealers often say 6,000 km because owners are urban, which matches the severe-use note. Open the book for your chassis year. The sections below cover both steps.

First 1,000 km

Change oil and filter at 1,000 km. The R25 likes revs. Hitting the limiter and using full throttle from cold will eat the cylinder wall. Vary the rpm, let the cooling fan come on once, then ride calmly.

The chain stretches in the first thousand kilometres. Drain-plug access under the fairing is tight. Use the correct torque and a new washer. Stripping the plug costs far more than the oil change.

Oil: mileage, spec, and litres

If the manual says 6,000 km, treat that as a practical city ceiling. If it says 10,000 km, that is a highway and clean-use ceiling. Istanbul stop-start at 6,000-7,000 km is the severe-use note. Use mileage or 12 months, whichever comes first. A winter R25 that only covers 3,000 km still needs yearly oil.

The spec is 10W-40, JASO MA or MA2. Yamalube is recommended. Do not use car oil. Wet clutches do not like it, even when the viscosity number looks the same.

With a filter, capacity is often 1.5-1.8 L on R25 and MT-25 manuals. Confirm the year. A 2 L bottle is enough. Do not pour the leftover in blindly. Warm the engine, wait, hold the bike upright, then read the stick or sight glass as the manual describes.

Filter, plugs, air, coolant

Change the oil filter at first service and on the chart after that. Fairing clips and paint are the DIY tax on an R25. One broken clip is enough for the panel to buzz on the next ride.

Spark plugs and the air filter often sit on an inspect or replace line near 12,000 km. Aftermarket pod filters void the printed interval. A dirty air box upsets mixture and raises oil use.

Coolant is typically 2-3 years, or 3-4 years if the manual calls it long life. The radiator is narrow. Insects and plastic bags cause overheating. Check the fan relay and thermostat before you assume the bike is low on oil. The temperature lamp is not an oil warning.

Chain, tires, brakes

The sport stance throws more grit and load at the chain. Lube it every 500 km and keep slack in the millimetre window from the manual. Do not mix 525 and 428. The size is in the book.

Sport tires wear the centre in city stop-start because the shoulders never get hot. Set pressure from the label. Track rubber is a different pressure and DOT story.

Change brake fluid every 2 years. Hills and late braking can finish pads by 8,000 km. Disc runout is a vibration job, not an oil job.

Valves and major service

Small Yamaha twins list valves around 24,000-40,000 km. Confirm the year. Fairing and tank labour is what drives the cost on an R25. If you hear noise or a cold misfire, talk about plugs, air, and valves before you blame the ECU.

Dealer “minor” and “major” packages are not Yamaha’s official names. Spark plugs, air filter, and a chain-set decision at 12,000 km are separate invoice lines. Do not treat them as the same as an oil change.

Turkey used-market notes

Used R25s often show rolled kilometres and track days. Oil-cap scars, peg scratches, tire brand, and chain stretch tell the story. “Dealer serviced” without invoices is a weak claim.

An aftermarket exhaust upsets mixture and the lambda reading. Plug colour and exhaust soot compress the calendar. Warranty and emissions are separate topics. Shortening the interval is not a punishment. It is how the bike was used.

Keep records
