When to bleed

Spongy lever, dark fluid, after hose / caliper work, or scheduled fluid changes. DOT guide: Motorcycle Brake Fluid: DOT 3 vs 4 vs 5.1

Prep

Correct DOT (cap), fresh sealed bottle, clear hose, wrench, gloves, paint protection. Do not use old opened fluid.

  • Treat front and rear as separate systems
  • Never let the reservoir run dry (it sucks air)
  • ABS bikes may need maker sequence / a scan tool
  • Repeat until the lever firms up

Classic manual sequence

Hose on the caliper bleed nipple, tip under fluid in a bottle. Pump and hold the lever, open-close the nipple, top the reservoir. Continue until bubbles stop.

ABS warning

Some ABS units need a special bleed routine or activation. Wrong order leaves air in the module. A shop can be cheaper than a guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Front only?

Rear is a separate system. Bleed the side that feels wrong; do both on scheduled services.

Need a vacuum tool?

No, but it helps. Classic pump-and-crack still works on most street bikes.

Which DOT?

Cap / manual. DOT 5 silicone does not mix with 5.1.

Fluid on paint?

Flush immediately with water / proper cleaner. Glycol eats paint.
