Is a bulb-check at key-on normal?

Many bikes light ABS, engine, and other lamps for a self-test, then go out. If they stay on while running or moving, treat them as real warnings.

The manual icon glossary wins; brands draw symbols slightly differently.

Stop now

Red oil pressure / level, over-temp, and sudden charge warnings: pull over safely. Riding without oil pressure can kill an engine in minutes.

  • Oil light: check level, top up if needed; if it stays on, tow
  • Temp: fan, coolant, clogged radiator / cap
  • Battery / charge: regulator / alternator suspicion; reduce loads and get somewhere safe

FI / check-engine

FI or check-engine usually points at sensors, injection, or emissions. The bike may enter limp mode: reduced power but still movable.

You do not always need to abandon it roadside, but ignoring it for a track day is expensive. A dealer / OBD tool reads codes. Plug context: Motorcycle Spark Plug Guide: Heat Range, Gap, Replacement

ABS light

A solid ABS lamp usually means the system is disabled; normal brakes may work without anti-lock help. Leave more room in wet or panic stops.

What to log

When the light came on, rpm / speed, rain, and last service. Those notes speed diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

FI is blinking. How do I read codes?

Some Yamaha / Honda procedures flash codes with key and buttons; many modern bikes need a shop / OBD tool. Check the manual.

ABS light for 5 seconds at start?

Self-test is normal. Solid while riding is a fault.

Oil light flickers at idle then goes out?

Still take it seriously. Check pressure / level / sensor; do not call it a quirk.

Is disconnecting the battery enough?

No. Clearing history without fixing the cause solves nothing.
