Motorcycle Coolant / Antifreeze Capacity Guide

Motorcycle coolant capacity: reservoir vs full system volume, MT-07 / MT-03 examples, chemistry mixing risks, and replacement intervals.

Two different capacities

Manuals usually list (1) reservoir / expansion tank to MAX, and (2) radiator plus hoses for the full system. Topping the overflow bottle alone does not mean the engine is fully filled.

Air-cooled classics are out of scope. This is for modern liquid-cooled nakeds, scooters, and adventure bikes.

Reference examples from popular models

Year and market can differ. Open your own manual before a flush.

  • Yamaha MT-07: radiator + lines ~1.60 L; reservoir to MAX ~0.25 L
  • Yamaha MT-03: radiator + lines ~0.81 L; reservoir to MAX ~0.25 L
  • Middleweight nakeds / 650 class: often ~1.5–2.5 L full system
  • Large adventure / superbike: 2.5–3.5+ L system bands appear
  • 125 liquid-cooled scooters: often stay near 0.7–1.2 L total

Which coolant? Color is not a spec

Green / red / blue alone is not a standard. Use the chemistry your manual calls for (often silicate or OAT / HOAT ethylene glycol, motorcycle-safe).

Mixing chemistries can sludge and clog. If the fluid is unknown, drain and refill with one product. Premixed 50/50 bottles reduce mix-ratio mistakes.

When to replace

Many makers call for 2–4 years or a set km interval. Cloudy color, rust, sweet leak smell, or constant level drop means act sooner.

Practical change warnings

Never open a hot radiator cap. After draining, follow the maker’s bleed procedure; air pockets cause overheating.

Check level cold between reservoir MIN and MAX. Repeated loss means find the leak (hose, pump, cap, gasket).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run plain water?

Emergency only, not a long-term plan. You need corrosion protection and proper freeze / boil margins.

Low reservoir: do I also fill the radiator?

Top the reservoir to MAX when cold first. If the system was emptied, you need a full radiator fill plus bleeding.

Do electric motorcycles use coolant?

Some cool batteries / inverters. This article targets ICE liquid-cooled bikes; follow the EV manual.

What if it keeps leaking?

Do not only top up. Find the source; pressure-cap tests and hose inspection are first steps.
