BMW R 1250 GS and R 1300 GS Maintenance Schedule
R 1250 GS and R 1300 GS: 10,000 km oil, 20,000 km valves and final-drive oil, 5W-40, annual BMW Service. F 750/850 GS differences.
GS service is two layers, not an expensive myth
BMW Motorrad volume in Turkey is small next to Japanese and Chinese sales, but search intent is high. Riders look up the R 1250 GS and R 1300 GS first, then the F 750 GS and F 850 GS. Liquid-cooled ShiftCam boxers split service into two layers. The first layer is every 10,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first: engine oil, oil filter, and BMW’s Standard service checklist. The dealer stamp for that visit is usually called BMW Service. The second layer is every 20,000 km: valve clearance, spark plugs, air filter, and rear shaft-drive oil. That shaft final drive is the bevel box in older English manuals. On the bike it is the rear drive you inspect for leaks, not a chain.
The R 1300 GS is a new boxer that keeps the same 10,000 km and 20,000 km skeleton. Filter SKU, plug type, and shaft details are year-specific. The air- and oil-cooled R nineT boxer checks valves at 10,000 km. Do not mix that calendar with a ShiftCam GS. Same brand and cylinder layout do not mean the same cam system or cooling.
Oil is specified as BMW Motorrad Advantec Ultimate, SAE 5W-40, API SL, JASO MA2, with no molybdenum additives. BMW warns that those additives can strip coatings. Pouring a Japanese 10W-40 because it is “motorcycle oil” is not a spec match. Viscosity and additive package are written for the GS boxer on purpose.
What the 10,000 km and annual visit includes
This visit changes engine oil and the oil filter. BMW diagnostics read the fault memory. Pads, discs, brake-fluid level, and hoses are checked. Tire pressure and tread are measured. A boxer GS has no chain. It has a shaft, so a visual leak check belongs on this visit. Shaft lube and rear-drive oil usually sit with the 20,000 km step, so you do not change shaft oil at every oil change. The sidestand, lights, start inhibit, steering-head bearings, and coolant level are on the list. An off-road or dusty air filter may be replaced on this visit even if the book also lists 20,000 km for a clean filter.
A low-mile GS hits 12 months before 10,000 km. Skipping oil because you only rode 6,000 km that year is not the book. Oil ages by kilometres and by the calendar. The running-in check is about 500-1,200 km. Keep that invoice for warranty and for the next owner.
The 20,000 km job
The major job measures valve clearance and adjusts it if needed. The plug set is replaced. LMAR8AI-10 is common on the R 1250 GS. Confirm the R 1300 GS book instead of copying that code. The air filter is replaced. Rear shaft-drive oil is due at 20,000 km or 2 years, whichever comes first. Shaft inspection and lubrication sit near this step. A long-interval shaft replacement line also exists, often around 60,000 km. Open the table for your year before you memorise that number.
Boxer heads need access and special tools. An oil change is not a major service. Most of the bill is labour, not parts. Home oil work covers part of the 10,000 km layer. It does not cover the 20,000 km layer.
Brakes, cooling, tires, and dirt
Brake fluid is first changed at 12 months, then every 2 years for the whole system. Use DOT 4. ESA and DSA suspension oil is not the engine-oil row. Forks and shocks are separate jobs. Changing engine oil does not service the suspension.
GS tires wear quickly from weight, two-up riding, and gravel. Use the loaded pressure line, not the empty-bike guess. A muddy air filter is not a 20,000 km item. If the box is wet and packed with dust, replace it on that visit.
Shaft drive removes the 500 km chain-lube ritual. It does not mean the shaft can be ignored. A torn boot and a leak cost more than a chain kit. Inspect the boots for cracks, tears, and oil at every wash. Catching a boot early is cheaper than catching a ruined rear drive late.
F 750 GS / F 850 GS / F 900 R
F-series parallel twins also speak 10,000 km oil and 20,000 km valves. The difference is the drive. These bikes have a chain instead of a shaft. Chain care returns every 500-800 km. Oil stays in the 5W-40 Advantec family. The F 900 R is a naked. It does not collect GS dust the same way, but city stop-start still acidifies oil. A low-mile F 900 R still hits the 12-month rule.
Some S 1000 RR manuals move valve checks to 30,000 km. Do not lock a sport BMW to a GS calendar. A boxer GS, an F twin, and an inline-four sport bike share a badge, not a service page.
Dealer versus independent
Diagnostics, software, and shaft work belong at a dealer or a BMW-fluent independent shop for most owners. You can change oil and the filter at home. Skip the diagnostic and Standard service checklist and that visit is not BMW Service. Warranty desks and used buyers want a full BMW history. A home oil receipt does not replace the 20,000 km shaft and valve stamp.
Records
Keep the 10,000 km oil row apart from the 20,000 km shaft and valve row. Do not collapse both into one “serviced” note. Write kilometres, date, oil spec, and whether shaft oil was changed. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the R 1250 GS oil interval?
Change engine oil every 10,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first. The running-in check is about 500-1,200 km. In heavy dirt, shorten the air filter and, in practice, the oil before the book ceiling.
Is the R 1300 GS different?
It uses the same 10,000 km and 20,000 km language. Filter, plug, and shaft details live in the R 1300 GS book. Do not copy 1250 part codes onto a 1300.
Is shaft oil the same as engine oil?
No. The rear drive is a separate box. Its oil is typically due at 20,000 km or 2 years. Do not pour engine oil into it.
Why 5W-40?
BMW specifies 5W-40, JASO MA2, and no molybdenum for the boxer and the F twins. A Japanese 10W-40 is not a blind spec match.
Does the F 850 GS have a chain?
Yes. The F-series is chain driven. The boxer GS is shaft driven. Do not hang chain care on the 10,000 km oil visit. Lubricate every 500-800 km as a separate job.
