Motorcycle Fuel Octane: RON 91 vs 95 vs 98
What octane does a motorcycle need? RON 91 / 95 / 98, E10, knock signs, and why higher octane is not free power.
What octane measures
RON (Research Octane Number) is resistance to knock / ping, not energy content. Higher octane means the fuel resists auto-ignition longer under pressure.
Higher-compression engines need a higher minimum RON. If the manual says ‘RON 91 or higher’, 95 is usually fine; 98 may be optional.
91 / 95 / 98 in practice
European and many other pumps label RON (do not confuse with US AKI). Above-minimum octane often changes nothing on stock maps.
- Never run below the manual minimum
- Persistent knock: check octane, fuel quality, and heat first
- Pump ‘racing 98’ is not +10 hp on a stock soft map
- Tank size and range are separate: Motorcycle Fuel Tank Capacity: Popular Models + Range
E10 and ethanol
Many modern bikes accept E10; the manual says so. Classic fuel-system materials can dislike ethanol.
E10 can go stale faster in storage; use stabilizer or fresher cycles in winter: Motorcycle Winter Storage Guide: Battery, Fuel, Tires, Moisture
If you hear knock
Metallic ping under load: trying higher octane can be a test, but ignition, carbon, heat, or sensors may be the real cause.

Cost math
Unnecessary 98 inflates the fuel bill without stretching range. Minimum RON + clean fuel + correct tire pressure does more.

Frequently Asked Questions
I put 91 in a 95+ bike. Damage?
Regular use below spec risks knock. One emergency fill is usually fine; return to the correct grade.
Does 98 add power?
Usually not on a stock ECU. Engines mapped for high octane are different.
Is RON the same as US pump octane?
Not always. Europe uses RON; the US often uses AKI (R+M)/2. Do not treat the numbers as identical.
Are additives required?
Clean fuel at the right octane is enough for most bikes. Additives are not magic without maker guidance.
