Motorcycle Winter Storage Guide: Battery, Fuel, Tires, Moisture
How to store a motorcycle for winter: battery care, fuel stabilizer, tires, moisture, covers, and a spring wake-up checklist.
Goal: keep chemistry and electrics stable
Long storage has three enemies: a dead battery, degraded fuel, and moisture / corrosion. Flat-spotting tires and rodents join the list.
A dry indoor space around 5–15 °C is ideal. A cover outdoors alone is not enough; moisture can tunnel underneath.
Battery
Charge fully. If it stays on the bike, connect a smart maintainer. If you remove it, keep it cool and dry and check voltage monthly.

Fuel and oil
Prefer a full tank (less condensation) or add stabilizer if your fuel type / manual allows, then run briefly. E10 can go stale faster in long sits.

Tires, stands, fluids
Set sticker pressure or slightly higher (do not balloon them). Use a center stand / paddock jack if you can; roll the wheels monthly.

Cover, pests, spring wake-up
Wash, then light protectant on chain and bare metal. Prefer a breathable cover / desiccant; do not seal nylon to the floor. Guard exhaust and airbox from mice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Must I start it weekly?
Not if a maintainer is connected. Starting without fully warming can add moisture; if you start it, ride until oil is hot.
Store with an empty tank?
Usually no. Full + stabilizer (when appropriate) is preferred. Empty tanks invite condensation and rust.
Is an outdoor cover enough?
Rarely. Covers without airflow trap damp. Indoor storage wins.
Leave a lithium battery installed?
Check cold and BMS rules; many lithium packs dislike charging below 0 °C. Confirm maintainer compatibility.
