What a YTX code means

YTX / GTX-style codes describe size family, terminal layout, and capacity class. ‘It fits the tray’ is not enough; polarity (L/R), height, and Ah band must match.

Photo the old label or use the OEM code in the manual. Aftermarket cross-references help; still verify polarity before connecting.

AGM, gel, flooded

Modern street bikes often use AGM: sealed, low maintenance, vibration tolerant. Flooded batteries need water checks; gel may need a different charge profile.

LiFePO4 conversions are light and strong, but BMS, charge voltage, and cold weather must match the system. Do not swap ‘because better’ without checking the regulator and starter demands.

When is it dying? Signs

Slow cranking, lights dimming under load, and death after long parking are classics. A bad alternator / regulator can kill a fresh battery; replacing the battery alone may not fix it.

  • Resting ~12.6–12.8 V is a healthy lead-acid band
  • Under ~12.0 V suggests deep discharge / weak cells
  • Running ~13.5–14.5 V is a common charge band (model-dependent); much higher risks the regulator

Winter and short trips

Five-minute city hops may never fully recharge the battery. For long storage, use a smart maintainer or remove the battery to a cool, dry place.

Replacement and logging

Disconnect negative first, reconnect it last. Clean terminals and use correct torque.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do bike batteries last?

Often 2–5 years. Short trips, cold weather, and a weak regulator shorten life.

Can I use a car charger?

High-amp car chargers can cook a bike battery. Prefer a motorcycle / AGM-smart charger.

Should I switch to lithium?

If weight matters and the electrical system is compatible. Otherwise a quality AGM is the lower-drama default.

Why does it die when parked?

Parasitic drain (alarm, USB, stuck relay), cold, and weak cells stack. An amp draw test may be needed.
