Ownership & Maintenance
Honda CBR500R and CB500F Maintenance Schedule: 471 cc Twin
Honda CBR500R, CB500F, CB500X, and CB500 Hornet service: 12,000 km oil, 24,000 km valves, litres. Same 471 cc twin, different bodywork and dust.
One twin, four suits
Since 2013 Honda’s 471 cc parallel twin has sat in the CBR500R, CB500F, CB500X, and later CB500 Hornet. Oil and valve rows are family. Bodywork, air filter, and tire wear change with the suit.

First 1,000 km
First oil and filter at 1,000 km. As an A2 and first middleweight, chain and tires often finish before oil. Keep the invoice. Break-in: New Motorcycle Break-In Guide: First Kilometers Done Right
Oil: Honda’s 12,000 km
EU copies put oil and filter at 12,000 km or 12 months after 1,000 km. US charts may say 8,000 miles. In Turkey, read the EU kilometres.
Honda 10W-30, and the temperature chart may allow 10W-40. JASO MA. With-filter capacity sits around 2.7–2.8 L on many 500-twin charts. Confirm the year. Hold the bike upright and finish on the stick.
| Suit | What changes | Service note |
|---|---|---|
| CBR500R | Bodywork | Plug and valve labour rise |
| CB500F / Hornet | Naked access | Same rows, cheaper removal |
| CB500X | Adventure tires and mud | Air filter and chain more often |
- Oil and filter: 12,000 km or 12 months
- Valves: 24,000 km
- Plugs: often a 24,000 km replace row
- Air filter: pull forward on the X and in dirty cities
- Brake fluid: 2 years in practice
Valves at 24,000 km
Honda’s 500 twin valves sit at 24,000 km. Do not copy a Yamaha R25 / MT-03 40,000 km line onto it. Measurement is cold. “It is quiet, skip it” is not the manual.
CBR bodywork costs more than the F. Two plugs are cheaper than a 650 four, but skipped valves are not fixed by tidy 12,000 km oil.
Chain, tires, cooling
A2 torque still eats chain. Clean every 500–800 km. Sidewall cracks are a calendar job, not only tread. Chain: How to Maintain a Motorcycle Chain: Clean, Lube, Tension Tires: Motorcycle Tire Life: When Should You Replace Them?
Honda coolant is often a 3-year line. Water top-up is not a change. Short trips finish plugs and the battery before oil.
Records
Split date, km, oil, filter, plugs, and the 24,000 km valve note. CBR bodywork labour inflates the invoice. Write that too. Garage: RPMVault motorcycle garage Hub: motorcycle maintenance schedule hub

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the CBR500R oil interval?
EU copies say 12,000 km or 12 months after the first 1,000 km. US charts may say 8,000 miles.
Are the CB500F and Hornet the same?
Engine rows are family. Naked access lowers labour. Confirm the Hornet year in its own book.
Does the CB500X need more service?
The oil ceiling stays. Dust pulls the air filter and chain forward. Look again after mud.
