Honda CB750 Hornet, Transalp, and Africa Twin Maintenance
Oil, valve, filter, and chain intervals for the Honda CB750 Hornet, XL750 Transalp, and Africa Twin. What the manual says, and how to apply it.
Why these three Hondas belong in one guide
The CB750 Hornet and XL750 Transalp have used the same 755 cc parallel twin since 2023. Oil mileage, filter steps, valve checks, and spark-plug intervals therefore match. The Transalp sees more dust. The Hornet lives in the city. The engine is shared, the air filter, chain, and tires are not.
The Africa Twin CRF1100 is a different engine. Honda’s rule is still familiar: oil every 12,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. Valve clearance is at 24,000 km. On DCT bikes, engine oil and gearbox oil are separate. Adventure Sports does not change the oil interval.
Honda typically specifies 10W-30, and some years allow 10W-40 on the temperature chart. The oil must be JASO MA motorcycle oil. Do not use car oil. Figures below are typical EU/Turkey manuals. Confirm your model year.
Hornet 750 and Transalp schedule
First service is about 1,000 km, with oil and filter. Then change oil every 12,000 km or 12 months. The filter is usually every other oil change (24,000 km and 48,000 km). Changing the filter every time in a dusty city is stricter than the book, not a conflict.
Replace the air filter at 24,000 km, sooner on a dirty Transalp. Inspect plugs at 24,000 km, replace at 48,000 km. Check valves at 24,000 km and 48,000 km, engine cold. Many bikes stay in spec. The measurement still matters.
Brake fluid is about every 2 years. Coolant is often 3 years. Lube the chain every 500–800 km. After mud, wash first. Oil on dirt becomes paste.
Capacity is near 3 litres with a filter, but copy the line from your own manual. Fill a little low, run, wait, hold the bike upright, then finish on the dipstick.

Africa Twin schedule
CRF1100 oil is still 12,000 km or yearly. Valves at 24,000 km. Off-road air filters do not wait for 12,000 km. The chain is 525. Spoke wheels need a look after mud. This is chain drive, not a BMW shaft.
DCT has its own fluid. Engine oil does not fill the gearbox. Manual models have a clutch free-play spec. Slip is often the wrong oil, then free play, then plates.
A touring Africa Twin can hit 12,000 km in one season. In heat and dust, 8,000–10,000 km oil is reasonable. Valves remain a 24,000 km job.
Chain, tires, and suspension
Hornet chains rust in city rain. Transalp and Africa Twin pack grit. Clean before you oil. Slack belongs in the millimetre window. An overtight chain kills the rear wheel bearing.
Two-up with panniers: use the loaded tire-pressure line. Solo Hornet uses the solo line. Wrong pressure wears the centre of the tire and the chain alignment.
Fork seals on adventure bikes weep after stone chips. That is not an oil-change job.
What else happens at 12,000 km?
Honda prints a long inspection list: brakes, tires, sidestand, fasteners, coolant hoses, fuel hose. Oil without that list is not a full service.
A battery still dies in winter storage. HISS hates a weak battery. DCT bikes overheat if a bag blocks the oil cooler.
How costs stack
Frequent and cheap: oil, filter, chain, tire pressure. Mid: air filter, plugs, brake fluid. Rare and expensive: 24,000 km valves, chain set, fork seals, a tire set. Africa Twin tires and chains cost more than a Hornet because of size and dirt.

10W-30 or 10W-40?
Use the temperature chart in your manual. Some years allow 10W-40 in hot weather. JASO MA motorcycle oil is required.
