Yamaha MT-03 Maintenance Schedule: Oil, Filter, Valves

Yamaha MT-03 and R3 321 cc service: first 1,000 km, 6,000 or 10,000 km oil by market, 10W-40 MA2. It is not an R25 249 cc.

MT-03 shares 321 cc with the R3, not the R25

The Yamaha MT-03 and YZF-R3 share a 321 cc parallel twin. Fairings on the R3 make plugs and the filter harder to reach. They do not change the km row. The R25 and MT-25 are 249 cc. Do not copy the 250 book onto 321. R25 schedule: Yamaha R25 Maintenance Schedule: Oil, Chain, Service km Class comparison: R25 vs Ninja 400 vs MT-03: 2026 A2 Sport Table

Small Yamaha sport books can print 6,000 km or 10,000 km oil by region. Asian copies often want 1,000 / 6,000 / 12,000 km. EU copies may sit at 10,000 km. Turkish shops often quote 6,000 km for city use. Your chassis-year manual wins.

First 1,000 km

First oil and filter are at 1,000 km. MT-03 torque arrives earlier than an R25. Cold wide-open throttle and the redline eat bearings. Vary rpm. Warm it until the fan runs once.

The chain grows in the first thousand. Drain-plug torque and the washer are in the book. Stripping the plug costs more than the oil.

Oil: km, litres, viscosity

If the book says 6,000 km, treat that as a city ceiling. If it says 10,000 km, that is a clean-road ceiling. Cutting to 6,000-7,000 km in stop-go is the severe-use note. Whichever comes first: km or 12 months.

Viscosity: 10W-40, JASO MA or MA2. Yamalube is the named option. Car 10W-40 hurts a wet clutch. Oil-change steps: Motorcycle Oil Change Guide: Steps, Specs, Mistakes

With-filter capacity on many 321 cc books sits roughly in a 2.1-2.6 L band. Confirm the year. Do not pour the R25 1.5-1.8 L band into an MT-03. Warm, wait, hold the bike upright, then read the stick.

  • First oil at 1,000 km
  • City practice: 6,000-7,000 km or 12 months
  • A 10,000 km row is a highway ceiling
  • 10W-40 MA or MA2
  • About 2.1-2.6 L with filter (confirm the book)

Filter, plugs, air, coolant, valves

The oil filter changes at first service and on the printed row. Plugs and air often land near 12,000 km for inspect or replace. Dust and an open aftermarket box void the printed air interval.

Coolant is often 2-3 years. A narrow radiator overheats with bugs and bags. Fan, thermostat, and level come before ‘it must be low on oil’.

Valves on many small Yamaha twins are an inspect row near 24,000 km. Open your year. Measure lash before you blame the ECU for noise. Valve guide: Motorcycle Valve Clearance: When and Why to Check

Chain, tires, brakes

A naked stance throws more grit at the chain than a sport fairing. Clean and lube every 500-800 km. Slack is the manual millimetres. Do not guess the size.

Brake fluid is a 2-year job. An A2 rider still eats pads on hills and late stops, often 8,000-12,000 km. A pulsing disc is not an oil job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does an MT-03 need oil?

Read the market book. City use often treats 6,000-7,000 km or 12 months as the ceiling. A 10,000 km row is a highway ceiling. First change is 1,000 km.

Can I use R25 oil volume?

No. 249 cc and 321 cc are not the same row. The 03 band is usually larger. Your year book binds.

Is the R3 on a different calendar?

The engine is the same 321 cc family. Fairing labour changes. The oil km row does not.

Is 24,000 km valve work guaranteed?

Many small Yamaha twins land in that band. Your chassis-year row is the source. Measure early if it is noisy.
